Conquerator is our entry into the Silicon Minds Warm-up Challenge, part of Microsoft’s Dream Build Play 2008 contest.
Download Here! (Requires Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista, and a graphics card that fully supports DirectX 9)
Conquerator is a player vs AI real time strategy game. Each player controls nodes on the map, and has units for attacking and defending nodes. The more nodes you control, the more units you produce. The goal of the game is to eliminate the other player from the map. At the start of the game, there is a neutral player who owns most of the map, but will not attack.
Units may move from a node that you control to any node that is adjacent along a link. You are not allowed to move the last unit out of a node that you control. In addition to the map nodes, each player has a satellite node. This is where new units enter the game. You can move units from your satellite to a node you control, or to a neutral node, but not to an enemy node. You can also move extra units you control up to the satellite.
The Control Scheme
- Left Click - select a node.
- Right Click - move 10% + 1 of the units from the selected node to the new node.
- Spacebar - pause\unpause the game
- Esc - give up early
Enjoy!

Why can you select enemy nodes?
How do you do multiplayer?
Feature request: quick access to sattelite (keystrokes).
a pretty fun game so far! Congrats
Is there a difficulty option? I seem to be able to beat the AI on any of the 3 types pretty easily (although clicking very rapidly!)
The game crashes in the XML deserialization since we in sweden uses comma, not dot, to denote decimal place in floating point numbers. Use InvariantCulture numbers parsing to correct this.
Nice. Wasn't sure what I was doing at first, but cool concept. Was pretty fun!
Thanks to everyone that has played our game so far! It's great to get feedback.
stuart: You can select enemy nodes because you might have attacking units there that you want to pull back. Multiplayer is coming at some point. The quick access to the satellite is something we've heard multiple requests for, so it's in our current development build.
aj: There's no difficulty option at the moment. We'll be adding one in a future release.
michael: My sincerest apologies to all international players that have issues. I suck. I will fix this as soon as I get a chance though (and thanks for the perfect bug report!).
It would be nice if you could hold down the mouse button. The clicking could get really bad with tons of units.
For some reason the nodes dont show up. I can see the map but I dont have nodes.
I see the map and some changing numbers, but no nodes either, so I don't even understand what is going on. I have a GeForce 8600M GT, Windows XP SP2 and DirectX 9.0c if that is of any help.
I cant see any nodes :(
Duuuude, this game owns... It's really one of the more entertaining things I've played in a while.
I would love a multiplayer option though, I think it ought to be your top priority at the moment, because playing against the computer does become boring fairly quickly.
Great job so far!
Sidenote: the game doesn't work on one of my computers, it has the same problem some others have, where the nodes don't show up.
Very nice game indeed. Difficulty levels would be much better though. And having an option to look up the controls from in-game would also be beneficial for those with weak memories. But once gotten the hang of it, it's a very fun game indeed! Can't say I found any bugs in the game, so good job! And good luck with the rest of it too!
Sorry that you're having issues; it seems like everything works for the vast majority of people, but its definitely possible that there are some hardware configurations that we're not 100% compatible with.
Our focus right now is on the XBOX 360 and multi-player, so fixing the nodes not showing up problem might not happen anytime soon. Still, if you see the issue, it would help us to know what OS you're running, what your graphics card/chip is, the driver version for your graphics card, and I'd love to see a screenshot.
The consensus seems to be that the map shows up, but not the nodes, which is weird, because they're all drawn the same way. This one's gonna bug me!
I'm running:
Dell Precision M90 Notebook
Windows XP Professional (SP2)
Intel Dual Core (2,16 ghz)
2 GB RAM
Nvidia FX3500M graphics card (512MB)
Widescreen screen
Resolution is 1920x1200
Graphics card software version: 6.14.0011.5683
I've tried to update DirectX to see if that was the problem, it wasn't. Directx was already at the latest version.

Hey, this game is amazing, but I have a few suggestions you may want to consider.
1. More maps (I'm sure you've heard this one and are working on it)
2. To coincide with number 1, perhaps a built in map editor, so users can create their own maps.
3. Add more players, i.e. make up to four people can play and allow 1-on-1, 1-on-2, 1-on-3, and 2-on-2
4. To coincide with the teams idea, why not allow the teams to act as a whole, in that one member of a team could move their pieces to an allies node to help them out or possibly even allow a person to send their pieces to an allies satellite.
I think above suggestions are good, and I think if you add them in along with other ideas people have suggested, throw in some internet/lan support and you got a great game! (Not that it isn't great already)
Well..
I'm sorry to say I just see a map and numbers running down.
Nothing else at all...
I can't click anything, I can't see anything, I just see a top-down island view.
This is a good game, however I think it lacks some depth. I would like to see something such as defence and attack modes for units in certain nodes. I also think the AI isn't very good, neither is the choice of games. With a few more maps with different difficulties, perhaps more than one enemy, and some special units, it would really spice the game up and require more tactics. Oh, and perhaps you could change the new unit rate...maybe make it so that having lots on one node doesn't give many, but having them spread out evenly gives more, this would mean attacking and unit production would need balancing.
How is the development going?
Same problem here, I see map but nothing else :'(
Maybe you could do it Vista compatible :)
Quite a fun game, but all the back and forth with the mouse is kind of a pain.
Personally I'd like to be able to move units between nodes by clicking on the links (with the destination being the node closer to the click), left clicking on a node itself to move units from the satellite and right clicking to send them back.
Nice idea, but this game unfortunately this game works for none of my friends. We tried it on Vista and XP 32 and 64 bit versions and we always only got the timer and the island view but not the lines and nodes, just the same as described in some of the above posts.
Well, it's been 6 months since the release, I guess it's safe to say that with no news at all this is completely abandoned.
Such a shame.

I'm happy to say that we're still at work on the game that Conquerator is becoming. We may have some more specific news on that in the coming weeks, so don't lose hope!
Working on this in our spare time limits how many different directions we can go in at once, and unfortunately we can't do some of the simpler but more immediate improvements without delaying our longer term plans.
Ok then, I'll be looking forward to it!
Should I ought to lose hope yet, another 6 months after the last message? I'm really hoping for another release sometime, as it's a fantastic game...
Don't lose hope! We just started working on the update again, after a spell of life intervening. I'll try to get some screenshots and news up in the next couple of weeks.
It's still going to be a few months before we have a new release, but it should be good :)
Okiedokie, I'd get some screenshots up if I were you : )
Are there any screens of this new update in the works? I find this game highly addictive.
